Chase’s Birth Story -
November 3, 2006

At 11pm on November 2nd an “Expecting Baby” Alarm that I had received as a gift went off, playing the tune Happy Birthday. It was supposed to be midnight, but I never changed the time for daylight savings! I thought great, nobody ever has their baby on their due date, here is just another reminder that I won’t be having the baby today! Then a few hours later at 2:30 am, now November 3rd (my due date!) I noticed that my water may have broken, so I emptied my bladder and laid down to be sure and sure enough there was a trickle of water down my leg. I woke up Jonathan and told him that my water had broken and that I need to call the doctor. I thought that they would make me go to the hospital because I know that they make you deliver within 24 hours of your water breaking. I spoke with the ob nurse and she advised me to go to the hospital. Jon was already up pacing and getting everything together. I told him to relax and lets take our time going to the hospital because once we are there, they are not going to let us leave. So I called Melissa, our Bradley Instructor, and she advised me to try and get my labor going naturally. Jon and I then both took showers and I ate a bagel because I knew it would be that last thing I could have for a while.

Chase, 5 months old

We set wee wee pads in the car and left the house at about 4am and headed to St. Josephs Woman’s hospital in Tampa. On the way to the hospital we called Jon’s mom and mine to let them know that we were on the way to have their grandson! I kept telling Jon that I was upset because I knew I was going to have to get pitocin and all of our efforts were going to go right down the tube. He eased my mind and told me that we would be fine and we were going to have our baby boy and that was the most important thing to remember.

Once we got to the hospital they took us directly to triage and verified that it was my amniotic fluid that had been leaking. The second nurse that we met with was very kind; she asked if we had a birth plan. I had thought at this point that it would be useless because my water had broken and they would want to start inducing me. When I handed her the birth plan she told me that she herself had 3 Bradley babies and told me we would be fine. They hooked me up to a fetal monitor and a monitor to check and see if I had been having any contractions. The baby was very happy and healthy but I was not yet having contractions.

They then took me up to the labor and delivery room so that Jon and I could wait for some action. In the meantime, my doctor had ordered Pitocin. So the nurse hooked me up to an IV and started a drip of fluids. She let me know that I could refuse the pitocin if I felt strongly about not receiving it. The nurses put me in the “natural birth” labor and delivery room that has a large tub, birthing ball and remote fetal monitors, so that I could walk around and labor so that I was comfortable. Jon was going through all of our Bradley information and was trying to find ways to get my labor going, so I had been sucking my thumb and using nipple stimulation to no avail!

I met with Dr. Whaba at 9:30am; she read my birth plan and respected all of my wishes but did feel at this point since my labor had not begun that I should start the pitocin, because if we went much longer the possibility of having a c-section was going to become more of a reality. So they went ahead and began the drip.

Meanwhile Jon had taken a nap and gone to get lunch, he kept saying how easy labor was and he didn’t know what all the fuss was about, he was kidding of course. . . I told him that he hadn’t seen anything yet!

Then at about 12:30 my labor began, talk about labor! My contracts began at about 2 minutes apart, but on a scale of 1-10 the pain was only a 2. Jon dimmed the lights and put on the nature sounds CD that Melissa had given us to help me relax. They went ahead and checked to see if I had dilated at all, I felt that I had not and told the nurse so, she told me not to be negative and that’s when I realized I was at a new stage of labor. At this point my labor was getting much harder, I did not want to walk around, all I wanted to do was sit on the toilet, so I did that for a while and it seemed to help quite a bit. I then laid down again and Jon was making sure that I did not stay on one side for too long. He was also beginning to rub my back during each contraction. He was also giving me ice and a cool cloth on my forehead in between. I was able to relax very deeply in between contracts and just tried to stay calm and relaxed during each contraction. Jon would talk me through it and let me know that it was about to let up and he kept telling me how well that I was doing. They then asked about my pain again and I told them 6, but I told Jon secretly that I thought it was an 8, I just thought that I was still so early along that it had to get worse. One half hour later they came to check me again and I went from 2 ½ centimeters dilated to 8 centimeters dilated. I started quivering and doubting myself, I told Jon that I didn’t think that I could do it anymore and I might need drugs, he told me that I was doing great and that I would be fine with out them.

Then, all I wanted to do was push, the doctor checked me and said not yet, she also had a few other babies to be born at the same time, so she was going to have to call in another doctor and the nurses told Jon that I may have to wait to push. There was no stopping me, so Dr. Wahaba was able to push up the remaining portion of my cervix so that I could begin pushing.

Jon had one leg and a nurse had my other leg and I started to push. Jon kept giving me ice in between contracts and kept telling me what a great job that I was doing, he loves those pep talks! They put a mirror so that I could see what was going on, and I was able to see the top of the babies head. It was the most amazing sight!

Dr. Whaba wasn’t in the room because she was delivering another baby and they were going to have to stop me from pushing, but there was no way that I was going to stop! She ran in the room, changed scrubs in my bathroom really quickly and basically caught Chase as he was being born at 3:21pm. Chase decided to punch on his way out and so I ended up with a third degree laceration which I did not feel happen. I then got to hold my beautiful baby boy, Chase Tynan. Dr. Whaba then collected the cord blood because we decided to bank it and the placenta then came out very quickly. Chase was 7lbs. 15 oz. and 22 inches long. He was born with light brown hair and blue eyes and right away looked just like his daddy. Jon was going crazy taking pictures while I was being stitched up and I could tell how proud he was of me! I put Chase right to my breast and he took immediately, one of the nurses was there to assist me. All of the nurses said what a great job that I did, at one point there was 5 of them in the room. I think they just wanted to see what was going on. They told me that I was the calmest natural birth that they had seen and that I did not even seem like I was in any pain, they also complimented Jon on being such a great coach! Chase was very alert and happy from the very beginning!
